Ripe dark berries, chocolate, sweet spices, charred bark, walnuts and hints of tar on the nose. Full and intense with depth and persistence to the fruit and firm, slightly chewy tannins. Lingering and earthy finish. Drink or hold. - JS

The 2019 Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni is imposing, grumbling up with a dark blend of dried black cherries, crushed plums, sage, allspice and sweet mint. This is texturally thrilling, velvety yet cooling, weighty yet spry, washing across the palate with polished red and black fruits and slowly building black-tea tannins. A menagerie of spices lingers along tobacco and blood orange nuances, finishing with tremendous length and concentration. The balance is absolutely fantastic. This is a stunning performance. - VM

A rich, medium- to full-bodied red, with a fragrant thread of chopped marjoram, orange peel and spice box winding through concentrated flavors of cherry reduction, damson plum preserves, red licorice and tarry mineral. Firm and chewy, though balanced overall, with a tightly coiled, well-spiced finish. Best after 2025. - WS
